Dr. Boughton – IB Program visit Tuesday, Nov 17 2009

In class last Tuesday, Dr. Boughton came in and told the class about the IB program, a 2 year course in which high school art students participate in a rigorous program, conduct independent research, and pursue a main topic or theme of their choice. In the spring, they will be interviewed by the IB program, and if accepted, the students will have the ability to study art abroad. Dr. Boughton presented some examples of IB student work, and I was very impressed to see the kind of work the students produced all on their own. We watched a few videos of students working in their studios as well as Dr. Bougton’s interview with a high school student. The IB interviews ask students open-ended questions about their art, such  as their ideas, themes, research, and other art-making processes. Interviewing students gives them the chance to explain their development throughout the year.

Class Critique-artist Tuesday, Nov 10 2009

We recently had an artist/critic session in class, where I was an artist and other students were critics. The critics went around to all the artists and asked them open-ended questions about their work. I greatly enjoyed this session because I not only got to share my artistic vision and explain why I do what I do, but I learned things about myself that I never even realized before. For example, I use a lot of unconventional materials in my work, and I enjoy making ceramic pieces that look like they are supposed to be another material (skin, for example). Through the critique, I learned that I am a ‘trompe l’oile’ artist and, to a point, a Surrealist artist as well. Discussion between artists and critics guides critics to learn about the artist’s work and the artist learns about themselves in the process. Implementing artist/critic sessions in a classroom would be greatly beneficial for assessment because the students are actively involved in each other’s assessment strategies.

Hello!

In our Art Ed Assessment class, we are trying to use this program called Second Life to have a virtual-reality art gallery. We create avatars and comment on the art hanging in the gallery. I, however, cannot seem to figure out this program and am having technical difficulties with it. I have an avatar named Lexington Scorfield, but I haven’t been able to teleport to Penn State Isle. I tried to download the program on my flash drive but it took over 40 minutes to download, and then it didn’t work. So, I am pretty frustrated with this program. Hopefully it will work soon!

1st day of class Wednesday, Aug 26 2009

Greetings! This is my first blog on WordPress. I have another blog on blogspot, but that one is irrelevant. This blog here is for our ARTE 387 classroom, creating a digital communication forum for our classmates to share thoughts and responses throughout the semester. I look forward to sharing my reflections with you all!
